Stevenson and Jarillo (1990) and Stevenson (2000) introduced the concept of entrepreneurial management to describe the phenomenon by which existing organisations pursue opportunities. Since then, the literature has focused on the different types of opportunity (in particular created versus existing opportunities) and on the different modes of opportunity pursuit (identification or construction) (Short et al., 2010), without addressing the organisational question. This research examines the different management modes depending on whether the opportunity results from a process of construction or of identification. To address this issue, we put forward propositions grounded in the literature. The relevance of these propositions is assessed through a qualitative study. The results suggest that there is a relationship between the nature of the opportunity and the organisation’s management mode. However, analysis of the various characteristics of management shows that the systematic opposition between entrepreneurial and bureaucratic management styles is not always relevant. Firms tend to combine several management styles. Finally, we also discuss the characteristics of the process and the relationship between the construction and the identification of opportunities.
