While entrepreneurial support has grown considerably alongside the rise of an entrepreneurial society, the proportion of entrepreneurs who actually benefit from it remains paradoxically low. The challenge is therefore to make support services more accessible. Addressing this issue requires a change in the level of analysis, shifting from an approach centred on entrepreneurial support organisations (ESOs) to an ecosystem-based approach.

This ambition lies at the heart of the research programme developed by the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Lab. This article highlights recent advances relating to concepts such as sub-ecosystems, ecosystemic path dependence and the ecosystemic legitimacy of entrepreneurial support organisations. These new approaches are of particular interest to public policymakers and entrepreneurial support practitioners.
