The notion of the entrepreneurial ecosystem has generated strong interest in the literature, but its dynamic dimension is not sufficiently taken into account. This article, inspired by an evolutionary perspective, proposes relying on the triptych of context, structure, and dynamics to compare ecosystem path dependencies. The analysis of the entrepreneurial ecosystems of Montpellier and Toulouse reveals two configurations, one political and the other industrial. The results contribute to enriching the adaptive complex systems approach by proposing a decomposition of path dependence in the form of sub-ecosystems and sequences. They are useful for policymakers by offering a dynamic representation of their entrepreneurial ecosystems.
